DALE CHIHULY b. 1941 in Tacoma, Washington
Dale Chihuly has for some years been a household name for our own generation, thanks to his use of glass in monumental works, the accessibility of his sculptural installations to the widest public and to the medium of television, which has brought images of Chihuly at work into millions of American homes.
Chihuly studied art at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design. He attended graduate school on scholarship at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he studied glass under Harvey K. Littleton. He finished his graduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), receiving a master of Fine Arts in 1968. The following year Chihuly became a member of the faculty of RISD and established a glass program there.
With Ruth Tamura of California College of Art and Crafts, Chihuly wrote a grant that established the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington in 1971. Situated about fifty miles north of Seattle on land provided by art patrons John and Anne Hauberg, Pilchuck continued to develop and grow in subsequent years under Chihuly's supervision. Chihuly continued to teach full-time at RISD until 1980, when he re-established himself in his home state of Washington. In subsequent years he returned to RISD as a visiting artist and lecturer.
Honors and fame on a national level began to come to Chihuly in the mid-1970s. He received the first of two Individual Artist's Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975 and had a major solo exhibition at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in 1978. Since that time major Chihuly exhibitions have taken place in museums across the United States and abroad. These include "Objets de Verre," at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre in Paris, France (1986), "Chihuly over Venice," a national tour that began at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri (1996), "Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000" at the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem, Israel (1999), "Chihuly at the V&A," Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2001), and "Mille Fiori," at the Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, Washington (2003).
Chihuly's reputation as a showman in glass is due in large part to his spectacular sculptural installations. Some of these works are permanent, such as those at the Yasui Konpira-Gu Shrine in Kyoto, Japan (1991), at Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in Seattle, Washington (1998), at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England (1999) and at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas (2004). Other works are temporary, lasting for a few days at most. Examples are "100,000 Pounds of Ice and Neon," an installation at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma Washington (1993); "Chihuly e Spoleto," an installation for the 38th Spoleto Festival of the Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy and the installation created for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences at the Governor's Ball in Hollywood, California (1996).
In large scale or small, Dale Chihuly's work in glass, drawing, painting and printmaking has been collected by numerous private collectors, corporations and public institutions. Public collections that boast a Chihuly number 200 and counting. Some of these are Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Detroit Museum of Arts, Michigan; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Museum of Arts and Design, New York City; St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri; Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio; and The White House Collection of American Crafts, Washington, DC.

Shipment and returns: Your print will be shipped as soon as we receive payment. Each print comes with a documentation sheet that certifies the materials used in making the print and the number of prints and proofs in the edition, along with other important information.
If you are not satisfied with your purchase return it within seven days of receipt in the packaging in which it was sent. The Littleton Collection will refund the purchase price on undamaged merchandise.
