ERWIN EISCH   b. 1927 Frauenau, Germany

At age nineteen Erwin Eisch was apprenticed in the glass engraving workshop of his father, Valentin Eisch.  He later studied at the School for Glassmaking in Zweisel and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.  When he was twenty-three Eisch, his parents and two brothers started a glass factory in Frauenau. Within four years Eisch went back to school to study sculpture. Upon his return to Frauenau he set up a studio in the factory's basement where he could create sculptures in glass.  In 1962 Harvey Littleton, excited to hear of a fellow artist who was using glass as a fine art medium, visited Eisch. The two became fast friends.

Eisch began exhibiting his glass work in 1962 and has exhibited since then in Germany, Austria, the United States, Japan, Czechoslovakia, France and Switzerland. Eisch's work can be found in many museums in Germany and in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Switzerland and The Netherlands.  In the United States his work is included in the collections of Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Elvehjem Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC and The Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio.

The vitreograph portrait of Erwin Eisch (above)  is by Thomas Buechner.  It is available from The Littleton Collection.

Erwin Eisch mined the dark side of human experience in his Kristallnacht: The Night of Crystal Death portfolio of 1992.  In it he attempted, as he wrote in his preface to the portfolio, to "come to terms with the burden, the shame, the anger and the fear" that he feels is the Nazi-era's legacy to the German people.

Eisch admits that "Art can do nothing..." to assuage his feelings of rage and helplessness against the unalterable events of history. Instead, he created this portfolio "for the sake of life and freedom; to give a sense to the sacrifice by ensuring the warning lives forever. I want to give courage to myself and to those who search for humanity, life and dignity; for evil is eternal and prejudice and falsehood lie everywhere in wait."

The ten prints, together with an introduction by Irvin J. Borowsky, founder of the American Interfaith Institute and the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia and a preface by Erwin Eisch, costs $4,250. The portfolio was printed in an edition of 50. The images are approx. 14 ¼ x 11 ¼ inches on a 30 x 22 ½ inch sheet (except for Opus nos. 4 and 9 with image size of approx. 11 ¼ x 14 ¼ on a 22 ½ x 30 inch sheet).
