NANCY GENN b. San Francisco, California; resides in Berkeley

A painter, sculptor and papermaker, Nancy Genn studied art at the College of  Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley.  She is considered to be part of the Berkeley School (1930s-1950) of artists whose work emphasizes formal values. Her geometric abstract works have been featured in many solo exhibitions throughout the past forty years in California, Washington and New York, and overseas in England, Japan and Italy.

Public collections containing Genn's work include the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; Los Angeles County Museum, California; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC; San Francisco Museum of Art, California; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC and The Oakland Museum, California. Two cast bronze sculptures by Genn are on the campus of Cowell College of the University of California, Santa Cruz.  These won an award from the Architecture Institute of America in 1966.

Nancy Genn is the recipient of the Fresno Art Museum's "Distinguished Artist for 2003" award, presented by that institution's Council of 100.  Each year the award acknowledges one woman's accomplishments in art.  Past recipients of the honor include Ruth Asawa, Betye Saar, Viola Frey, Helen Lundeberg and June Wayne.  The award included a solo exhibition of Genn's work at the Fresno Art Museum ("Planes of Light," September 9 - November 9, 2003).

In  an article for the Fresno Bee ("The Spirit of Light," October 2, 2003) Donald Munro remarked on the depiction of light in Genn's work. He wrote, "This is light as geometry. As shape and form. In Genn's work, it's as if light is subdued and mounted for posterity - not with clinical precision but with the determined emotion of an artist who revels in the spaces around her."

Many cultures have left their mark on the area, including the Egyptian, Syrian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. The locale contains an ancient amphitheater and Tombs, and a caravansary and aqueduct built in the sixteenth century.
