HERB JACKSON b. 1945 Raleigh, North Carolina

Herb Jackson is a faculty member and former Chair of the Art Department at Davidson College in North Carolina.  His works have been shown nationally and internationally for over thirty years in solo and group exhibitions.  In 1999 he received the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian honor for Lifetime Achievement in Fine Arts.  Jackson has visited Littleton Studios numerous times over the years.

Jackson received his Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College in 1967 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1970.  His works can be found in  over eighty museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum,  the Library of Congress, the  Smithsonian Institution and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In England his work is in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Jackson's realm of color has become richer and more tangible in his newly published prints, which combine intaglio vitreography with digital transfer. The imagery goes right to the edges of the paper deckle, making for a subtle interface between artwork and the space that surrounds it. The prints bear a certain resemblance to Jackson's paintings in oil pastel but unlike those works, in which texture is readily perceived in the superficial build-up of clotted pigment, the prints have an illusory texture that allows the eye to drift into their atmospheric depths.

"Printmaking," Jackson has written, "is simply another form or approach" for artistic expression. Yet this artist has turned to printmaking time and again to express the intimate intensity and quiet energy for which his work is prized.
