Doubled Stewart's Sticks (diptych), 2006

Vitreograph on Rives BFK White,  Edition of 20

image size: 20 x 56 inches

paper size: 21 x 56 inches (assembled as pictured)            $2,500*

Doubled Stewart's Sticks is one of a continuing series of works titled "Stewart's Sticks." Nakashima is well known for his large scale drawings and prints of tree piles. These were begun in 1999 when he moved his studio to the small town of Berryville, Virginia, about 70 miles outside Washington, DC. Although it was still a small town, Nakashima says that Berryville was fast becoming a commuter community for people working in the software industry based in Dulles, Virginia. Berryville's orchards were being bulldozed to make way for subdivisions. Nakashima was struck by the mountainous piles of trees that resulted from these mass uprootings and took photographs of several of these piles, three of which form the basis of a continuing series of paintings, collages, drawings and prints.

Nakashima transfers his photographic source material by means of a grid to his huge canvases, some of which are 24 feet wide. Though the print format of Doubled Stewart's Sticks is smaller, Nakashima's use of the grid as a compositional device can clearly be seen. The artist treats each square (there are 102 of them) as a complete composition n its own right. His use of a patchwork of digital photos of land and sky overlaid with the rich black tones of his etching divides the pile as though into separate moments in time.
