Littleton studio glass at SOFA Chicago

(10/11/07) Sculptural glass works by Harvey K. Littleton will be featured alongside those of Richard Marquis, Jay Musler, Colin Reid, Ginny Ruffner, Therman Statom and John Littleton and Kate Vogel in the Maurine Littleton Gallery at SOFA Chicago this fall. SOFA Chicago is an annual art exposition dedicated to bridging the worlds of design, decoration and fine art. One hundred galleries will be represented at the event, which will be held November 2, 3 and 4 at Navy Pier's Festival Hall. Littleton family featured in Florida Design

(10/1/07) The fall issue of Florida Design (Vol. 17 No. 3) includes an article about Harvey K. Littleton and his family. Written by Jesse Brattner, the article focuses on the family's connection to studio glass from its artistic production, collecting glass, exhibiting, marketing and selling glass and even mixing and packaging the dry ingredients of glass for sale to artists across the country. The article is illustrated with pictures of Harvey Littleton's glass sculpture and that of his son John and daughter-in-law,  Kate Vogel. Son Thomas Littleton is the owner of Spruce Pine Batch Co. who ships bags of glass "batch" to points as far away as Seattle and Hawaii. Littleton's daughters are also part of the business of glass. Daughter Carol L. Shay is curator and manager at Littleton Studios in Spruce Pine, North Carolina and Maurine directs the Maurine Littleton Gallery in Washington, DC. 

 

Vitreograph exhibition opens at Emory & Henry College

(9/22/07) An exhibition featuring vitreographs along with works in other media will open to the public in the 1912 Gallery at Emory and Henry College on September 26. "Beyond the Glass Menagerie: Littleton, Chihuly & Friends" will feature works by Warrington Colescott, Erwin Eisch, Herb Jackson, Clarence Morgan, Judith O'Rourke, Italo Scanga, Therman Statom and Dan Welden as well as Harvey Littleton and Dale Chihuly. Each artist will be represented by a work in vitreography made at Littleton Studios as well as a work in the artist's primary medium, whether it be glass, oil paint, pastel or a traditional printmaking form such as etching or lithography. A talk by Littleton Studios' master printer, Judith O'Rourke, will be presented at the college on October 16.  The exhibition will continue through November 10.

 

Contemporary Glass featured at Bergstrom Mahler Museum

(9/22/07) The Bergstrom Mahler Museum in Neenah, Wisconsin is currently displaying more than 50 pieces of contemporary glass from its permanent collection.  Most of the pieces on display were donated to the museum by glass collectors Don and Carol Wiiken. Knoxville Museum of Art Guild to hold benefit auction

(9/07/07) The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art will hold its ninth annual Artscapes Art Auction on October 4 and 5, 2007 to benefit the Knoxville Museum of Art. Over 100 works of art to be auctioned will be on display at the museum for three weeks prior to the event, beginning September 14.  Vitreographs  by Harvey Littleton, Erwin Eisch, Gretel Eisch, Richard Jolley and Tom Nakashima are among the objects to be auctioned.  Tickets for the October 4 event, which includes a cocktail party and silent auction are $50 per person. Tickets for the October 5 event, which includes dinner and a live auction, are $150 per person.  The 2007 Artscapes Art Auction will celebrate the art of Richard Jolley. Warrington Colescott exhibits prints and paintings

(9/07/07) Warrington Colescott is currently exhibiting prints and paintings in a solo show at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. Titled "Satirical Conscience," the exhibition is on view in the university's Merwin Gallery through October 5, 2007. A lecture by the artist will be held in the gallery on Thursday, October 4 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.  A reception will follow the lecture. Visit Colescott web page

 

Littleton Studios Workshop set for Aug 31 - Sept 5, 2007

(8/7/07) Littleton Studios' first ever workshop in vitreograph and solarplate techniques is a go. Co-instructed by  Dan Welden and Judith O'Rourke, the workshop will focus on two versatile, low-solvent printmaking techniques. Places are still available in the workshop; the cost is $500.

 

Herb Jackson Retrospective

(8/7/07) The McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, North Carolina has scheduled a retrospective of the paintings of Herb Jackson. "Veronica's Veils: Herb Jackson" will open on September 21 and continue through November 3, 2007. The exhibition's title refers to a series of heavily textured paintings that the artist began in 1980. A reception will follow a talk given by the artist on September 28. Paul Stankard to create Vitreographs

(8/7/07) Paul Stankard has taken the glass paperweight to new heights of artistry in our time. Littleton Studios is pleased to announce that  Mr. Stankard  is scheduled to create in the medium of the vitreograph print this August. Stankard is famous for crafting three-dimensional glass flowers, fruits, insects and diminutive "root people" that float  in crystalline blocks and spheres.  Watch this website for news of his print production.

 

Connor Everts: Studies in Desperation

(7/11/07) The work of Connor Everts will appear at Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art in Culver City, California. The solo show is titled "Connor Everts: Studies in Desperation" and will open with a reception on Friday, July 20. The exhibition continues through August 25, 2007.  Located at 8568 Washington Boulevard in Culver City,  Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art focuses on postwar contemporary art in all media with an emphasis on abstraction. Littleton Studios announces printmaking workshop

(6/26/07) Littleton Studios of Spruce Pine, North Carolina will hold its first ever workshop in Solarplate etching and vitreography August 31 to September 5, 2007. Co-instructed by Dan Welden and Judith O'Rourke, the workshop will focus on two versatile, low-solvent printmaking techniques.  Dan Welden developed the Solarplate method, which uses a light-sensitive polymer plate in both relief and intaglio processes.  Judith O'Rourke, master printer at Littleton Studios, is an expert on vitreography (glass plate) printmaking. The workshop cost is $500. 

 

Vitreograph exhibition scheduled for Fall 2007

(5/29/07) Emory & Henry College in Virginia has scheduled an exhibition of vitreograph prints from Littleton Studios for its 1912 Gallery. The show will include works by Harvey K. Littleton, Dale Chihuly, Erwin Eisch, Herb Jackson, Clarence Morgan, Judith O'Rourke, Italo Scanga and Therman Statom, among others. Works in other media by the artists, including studio glass and paintings will augment the exhibition, which will run from September 26 through November 10, 2007.

 

Erwin Eisch celebrates 80th Birthday with retrospective exhibitions

(5/19/07) The eightieth birthday of Erwin Eisch is cause for celebration in Germany this spring, where three exhibitions and a catalog present over forty years of the artist's work. In Passau, "Erwin Eisch - zum 80 Geburtstag" opened at  the St. Anna Kapelle on March 30 and continued through May 6. The exhibition will travel to Regensburg, where it will be seen at the Kunst und Gewerbeverein from June 16 through July 8. A catalog, "Erwin Eisch: Der Himmel fängt am boden an" ("The Sky begins at the Soil") was published in conjunction with the exhibition. At the gallery and museum of the Eisch Atelier in Frauenau an exhibition of Erwin Eisch's glass sculpture, drawings, paintings and vitreograph prints continues through June 30.  Visit Eisch web page

 

Corning Museum of Glass adds Littleton sculpture to collection

(5/19/07) The Corning Museum of Glass announced several important acquisitions to its collection in its New Glass Review 28.  In addition to works by Vladimir Kopecký, Marvin Lipofsky, Beverley Semmes, Josh Simpson, Karla Trinkley, Dana Vachtová and František Vizner the museum acquired "Gold and Green Implied Movement," a six-part glass sculpture by Harvey K. Littleton. The sculpture will join other Littleton sculptures already in the Corning Museum of Glass collection. Visit Littleton web page

 

University of Pennsylvania publishes Glass and Print book

(5/18/07) Penn Press recently released Glass and Print, a book by Dr. Kevin Petrie that outlines the history and techniques of printing on and from glass surfaces. The book contains a chapter titled "'Vitreography' -- Printing from Glass onto Paper."  The author is Programme Leader for the Master of Arts in Glass at the University of Sunderland in England.

 

BookWorks hosts Vitreograph Exhibition and Workshop

(5/16/07) BookWorks, a studio and exhibition space dedicated to printmaking and the art of the book, will present an exhibition of vitreograph prints from Littleton Studios from June 2 through August 25.   A  vitreograph workshop with master printer Judith O'Rourke of Littleton Studios will be held on July 7 and 8 in the bookmaking studio at BookWorks. Harvey K. Littleton included in Craft in America Project

(5/11/07) Harvey K. Littleton's sculpture "Pink Arc" (1983) is included in a major multi-part project titled  "Craft in America: A journey to the origins, artists and techniques of American craft."  Organized by Craft in America, Inc. of Los Angeles, the project includes a traveling exhibition titled "Craft in America: Expanding Traditions, a three-episode documentary that will be aired on PBS stations beginning May 30, a comprehensive website and a book titled Craft in America: Two Centuries of Artists Objects. Craft media included in the survey are ceramics, glass, wood, furniture, metalwork, jewelry, fiber and baskets. The exhibition opened in April at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock and will travel to venues in Portland, Oregon, San Diego, Houston, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Oklahoma City, Palm Springs and Brockton, Massachusetts. Darby Bannard to exhibit Minimal Paintings

(5/10/07) Darby Bannard will show a series of early paintings at Jacobsen Howard Gallery in New York City.  According to art critic Michael Fried, these "so-called 'minimal' paintings of the first half of the sixties are among the pictorial glories of the time."  The exhibition opens today, May 10, with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jacobsen Howard Gallery is located at 22 East 72nd Street in New York. Clarence Morgan to exhibit in New York City

(2/4/07) Clarence Morgan's new paintings will be featured in a two person exhibition with sculptor Johnny Swing at Reeves Contemporary. The exhibition, which opens on March 1 with an artists reception from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will continue through March 31. Keith Rasmussen, 1942 - 2006

(1/30/07) Lithographer Keith Rasmussen died on December 12, 2006. His home was in Greenville, Georgia. He was a marvelous draughtsman whose specialty was historic buildings and their environs.  He visited Littleton Studios in 1997 and and 2001, producing five print editions during the first visit and two during the second. Public collections holding his work include the Brooklyn Museum, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta) the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the State of Georgia. Visit Rasmussen web page

 

Kenneth A. Kerslake, 1930 - 2007

(1/14/07) Ken Kerslake, the noted artist and educator who established the printmaking program at the University of Florida, died on January 7. Ken endured  prolonged illness with good humor, concern for others and continuing hope. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he was a graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign. He accepted a position on the faculty of the University of Florida in 1958 and retired with the rank of Distinguished Service Professor in 1996. The Southern Graphics Council, of which he served as president in the early 1990s, honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2004. Ken visited Littleton Studios many times over the years, creating 23 prints on subjects as diverse as the sunlit objects on his Florida patio, observations on tourism and traveling and his own family history.
