THOMAS PHILABAUM  Born 1947 in Toledo, Ohio, resides in Tucson, Arizona

Thomas Philabaum found his medium in clay while an undergraduate at Southern Illinois University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1969.  He entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1971 with the idea that he would combine ceramic with glass in his work. To that end he studied clay with Don Reitz and glass with Harvey K. Littleton and Eriks Rudans. Philabaum moved to Tucson in 1974 where he started a glass and clay cooperative with six other artists.

By 1977 his glass sculptures began to sell in several galleries around the country. He returned to school in the early 1980s to continue his study of ceramics at the University of Arizona, and was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in 1983. About that time he began his "Reptilian" and "Histolith" series in glass, and his career as a glass artist took off. He was  invited to give lectures and workshops about his technique in Iceland and Germany in the mid-1980s, and he produced work for exhibitions around the United States. In 1985 he opened an art gallery in downtown Tucson, which he continues to operate today.

In 1998 Philabaum received the Arizona Governors Art Award, and in 2000 he received the Arizona Arts Award. His work can be found in many corporate and private collections in the United States and abroad. Public institutions that hold his work include Glasmuseum Ebeltoft (Denmark), Glasmuseum Frauenau (Germany), Arizona State University Museum of Art, Tempe; Tucson Museum of Art and the University of Minnesota Art Museum, Minneapolis.

PATRICK WADLEY 1950-1992

Patrick Wadley discovered glass etching in 1980 when he accidentally dropped a soft drink bottle into a sandblaster. This led to his learning to selectively sandblast areas of glass using contact paper stencils. On very thick pieces of sheet glass, Wadley was able to achieve detailed, low relief sculptural effects. He later transposed the technique to three-dimensional forms.

Wadley studied briefly at the University of Oklahoma and Sam Houston State University in Austin, Texas.  He also studied at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington on a Corning Scholarship, and was later an instructor and artist in residence there. Wadley made his home in Texas in 1970 where he fulfilled alternate service as a conscientious objector. Travel in Europe, especially to France, had a great influence on his work.

He exhibited in in numerous solo shows in Texas and in group exhibitions in New York City, Washington, DC, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Aspen, Santa Fe and San Francisco.  His work is in  many private collections.  Public collections holding his work include the Blanton Museum of the University of Texas, Austin; The High Museum, Atlanta and the Rhode Island School of Design.
