JOHN WILDE 1919-2006
John Wilde (pronounced WILL-dee) was born, raised, educated and conducted his artistic and academic career in Wisconsin. His paintings and graphic works are acclaimed as much for their eerily quiet surrealism as for the tender feeling with which Wilde meticulously limned his subjects. He was part of the Wisconsin Surrealist movement of the 1930s and '40s with Marshall Glasier, Dudley Hupper, Karl Priebe and Gertrude Abercrombie.
Wilde began his teaching career at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1948 after receiving both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science there. He retired from teaching in 1982 as the Alfred Sessler Distinguished Professor of Art. Wilde was an Academician of the National Academy of Design in New York City and a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters.
His exhibition career was long and distinguished. Recent exhibitions included
"With Friends: Six Magic Realists 1940-1965" at the Chazen Museum of
Art, Madison, Wisconsin (2005); "John Wilde:
Recent Work" at Perimeter Gallery in Chicago, Illinois ( 2004); "A Modern
Bestiary: Artists View the Animal Kingdom" at the Racine Art Museum (2002)
and "Social Context: Art for the Mid-Twentieth
Century" at the Madison Art Center (2002). A retrospective of his work, "Wildeworld: The Art of John Wilde," was
held in 1999 at the Elvehjem Museum of Art.
Among the many public collections that hold Wilde's work are the Art Institute of Chicago, Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, Connecticut, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
